Heart & Hands (Dorset Folk) for Dorset Museum

There is a current exhibition open at Dorset Museum January -March 2026 showcasing our Heart & Hands Dorset Folk project for the (Un)Common People Wessex Museums exhibitions to connect new stories to folk objects. Heart & Hands is in partnership with the South West Dorset Multi-Cultural Network members. We are also holding a celebratory conversation and chat with the groups involved on Saturday 7th February 10am-12pm.

The focus of the project was to stimulate conversations around traditions, myth-making and
transmission of folk culture inspired by the Museum’s collection whilst making creative responses. Selected objects connected to folk or multi – cultural themes included a Persian mace, story stick, fish shop sign, jewellery and Roman mosaic personifications of the seasons.
The participants explored how seasonal themes, celebrations and local folk traditions are passed down generations and what arts and crafts objects travel through time and place to survive, also adding their own stories and enjoying making folk art with guest artists.
Led by Sarah Acton and Alex Briggs from the museum, and with guest artists, activities included making totemic ceramic animal heads and staves with ceramicist Ilse Black, participatory Morris dances in the Victorian Hall with Festus Derriman, Dorset Ooser- inspired large mask with costume designer, Sophie Fretwell, and weaving beautiful Abbotsbury May fresh flower wreaths and garlands to bless and celebrate harvest of land and sea with Flowers Social flower grower and florist, Jules Hammon.

“The rich and immersive experience was amazing. These workshops blend learning with hands – on activities and community engagement. It has also given us an insight into local history and culture. It was
awesome that our group got to explore the museum after hours.”

Our thanks to participants, Museum volunteers, staff and artists for this joyful project that stays alive in the stories and memories shared together.
